Appropriately, the story begins with death, flashes back to the past and hints towards the demise of a woman and the traditions of the past she personifies.

This coming of age story features a boy stuck in a family with a father who can be thought of as Satan, and can be easily seen as connected to myths of Zeus and Cronus.

At first glance, Emily seems like a lonely woman with little self-confidence and low self-esteem that seems to stem from her upbringing by her father. She told them that her father was not dead. He tells his drinking buddies that he is not the marrying kind. The works in this collection have three things in common, the community, which as we are going to see a very important character as a whole, the solitude of human beings which in the case of Miss Emily is what makes us sympathize with this woman, but also is what makes us see h She initially refuses to acknowledge his death, then retreats into her house with a mysterious illness.

Everybody in town acted differently to Miss Emily, but they all come together to one opinion that she was a woman who kept her life to herself at the all time Intimidated by Emily and her ticking watch, the aldermen leave, but they continue to send tax notices every year, all of which are returned without comment.

In "A Rose for Emily' by William Faulkner, atmosphere seems more potent than the hastily sketched characters in the story. When she fails to respond, a deputation calls on her, but she insists that she owes no taxes, as Colonel Sartoris will tell them he has been dead ten years. By doing so, he enhances the plot and presents two different perspectives of time held by the characters.

In my opinion, the stories were eye catching because of how the author made its characters react and respond toward the suspense and eeriness in certain parts of the climax of the stories. The story begins with the death of a prominent old woman, Emily, and finishes with the startling discovery that Emily as been sleeping with the corpse of her lover, whom she murdered, for the past forty years.
